    December’s Labour Force Survey Numbers: Blowing Past Expectations, a Stellar and Unexpected Rebound for Canada’s Labour Market

     
     
    Last Friday’s release of Labor Force numbers for the month of December showed the strength of Canada’s labour market, with unemployment at 5.0%, only slightly above the 40-year record low of 4.9% seen in June and July. There was also an increase of nearly 104K jobs last month, which defied market expectations.

    In a related piece on gig workers, Marwa Abdou, our Senior Research Director with the Business Data Lab, commented on how gig workers are helping some employers fill the gaps in the tight job market.
