In response to the results of the federal election on April 28, 2025, Fiona Famulak, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce, released the following statement:
“On behalf of the BC Chamber of Commerce, I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election to the House of Commons and the re-election of the Liberal Party of Canada to form government. As the largest and most broadly based business organization in the province, we look forward to working with the Prime Minister and his government on critical issues that will unlock the economic potential for British Columbia and Canada.
“Foremost is the need for the federal government to demonstrate leadership to help create a single market in our country where businesses and consumers can buy and sell products without onerous provincial restrictions impeding productivity and growth.
“Along with other provincial and territorial chambers of commerce, we urge Prime Minister Carney to take strong, decisive and urgent action to build a plan to enhance national competitiveness and economic resilience as was committed to during the campaign.  Working collaboratively with provincial governments, a national plan must include:
    • Removing barriers to interprovincial trade and labour mobility to allow for the seamless movement of goods, services and talent.
    • Making an immediate, unified and unambiguous commitment to a National Energy Corridor to facilitate the movement of oil, natural gas, electricity, hydrogen and other resources across Canada and open up both internal and new export markets.
    • Bolstering domestic procurement and supply chains by increasing the weighting of local economic impact in procurement decisions, using trade agreement flexibilities to support domestic suppliers, and aligning procurement policies with key sectors such as manufacturing, agrifood, and steel. And invest in strengthening domestic supply chains and our industrial capacity to meet economic needs.
    • Strengthening Canada’s trade position with the U.S and ensure that a renewed Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) protects our country’s small-, medium- and large-sized businesses from unjustified and damaging tariffs imposed by the United States.
I’d also like to express my gratitude to all the candidates who put their names forward for election and the tens of millions of people who exercised their democratic right to vote. We are privileged to live in Canada. Participating in democracy is the best way to ensure it will continue.”
