New Legislation Signals Start of Long-Term Journey Toward Reconciliation

BC Chamber CEO Val Litwin was in Victoria last week to witness Minister Scott Fraser introducing new legislation that will create a framework for reconciliation for the BC Government.

"We’re optimistic about the potential here—the legislation introduced today will likely advance reconciliation and equity, and also provide greater certainty for the business community over time.”  says Val Litwin, President & CEO, BC Chamber of Commerce.

    Policy Win!

In recent weeks, The BC government moved forward with several initiatives that aim to improve access to justice in BC—a direct reflection of two policies that have been on the BC Chamber’s books since 2017—namely:  "We've been participating in the Access to Justice BC Network for two years, providing influence on how resources in the justice system are allocated," says Dan Baxter, BC Chamber's Director of Policy.

    The details
In October, The Province made a significant investment in legal aid—expanding the availability of attorneys across BC. To improve efficiency of our court system, the government also launched a Court Digital Transformation Strategy, and also expanded its online divorce assistance, making the no-contest service now available to divorcing couples with children.

As part of its ICBC reforms, the Province also moved to direct ICBC disputes under $50,000 to a Civil Resolution Tribunal. The Province also added new courthouse services to help resolve family disputes and civil lawsuits more efficiently, and resolve disputes outside of court, while providing increased funding for registry staff, sheriffs and other essential court services.

Woodfibre LNG will be the cleanest LNG export project in the world. The site’s access to renewable BC Hydro electricity means they can reduce GHG’s by 80%. Access to renewable energy means annual greenhouse gas emissions (per tonne, per tonne of LNG) will be .0059. The next best is LNG Canada at .15.
