The Comeau Case and Interprovincial Trade |
The Comeau Case and Interprovincial Trade In this edition of 5 Minutes for Business, Aaron Van Tassel, our Business Law Committee Intern, examines the Comeau case, which will be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada this week, and the lasting impact it could have on interprovincial trade. When Gerard Comeau crossed over to Québec from New Brunswick, where he lived, to buy a few cases of beer, he was in for quite the surprise. Coming back into New Brunswick, he was fined for transporting alcohol across the border. He contested the fine, unleashing a much larger debate on constitutional interpretation and free trade between provinces. But what impact could this week’s decision have on you and your business?
